Abstract
3GPP offers a set of specifications for the Media Industry, in particular for the distribution of TV Services to mobile devices. In the context of 5G, 5G Media Streaming and 5G Broadcast are prominent examples of technology enablers that support third-party service providers to enable and optimize media delivery to mobile devices. While core specifications are complete, 3GPP lacks a reference and conformance program to validate and prototype its specifications and, by this, to make them accessible and tangible for content providers. The 5G Media Action Group (5G-MAG) has undertaken the task to fill this gap by providing a set of open-source 5G-MAG Reference Tools. Building on the launch success for 5G Broadcast, four additional minimal viable products (MVPs) are introduced: 5G Media Streaming without and with Media Session Handling, seamless broadcast/unicast switching and Public Warning Services for Emergency Alerts. These MVPs focus on building core functions and reference points to provide baseline core functions that can later be extended by the developer community with more detailed features. Additional information is provided related to usage and applications of the 5G-MAG Reference Tools, including the combination with DVB-I service discovery metadata as well as reports of demonstrations and trials. Planning of next steps is discussed.
