  • 23.09.2020 - FLAME: Bringing Media and Telco together in the 5G value chain

    5G-MAG will be participating in the online virtual event organised by FLAME. Our member VRT will also be there! Join FLAME partners for the project’s grand finale event for demonstrations of how media companies have developed new services with 5G through real-world trials using the FLAME platform, and to explore lessons learnt and future directions for 5G adoption and beyond towards 6G. The IEEE Broadcast Technology Society (BTS) i s one of them focused on broadcasting and media distribution. The field of interest of the IEEE Broadcast Technology Society encompasses devices, equipment, techniques, and systems related to broadcast technologiy, including the production, distribution, wired and wireless transmission, propagation aspects, and reception.     The 5G-MAG Steering Group has recently approved the membership of ESA (European Space Agency), ERT A.E. (Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation) and Media Broadcast GmbH. With the addition of these organizations, 5G-MAG currently counts 39 members. ESA The European Space Agency (ESA) is an international organization with 22 member states devoted to providing, and to promoting, for exclusively peaceful purposes, cooperation among European States in space research and technology and their space applications. ESA is in charge of drawing up and carrying through the European space programme. ESA brings to 5G-MAG its expertise on research on the space environment and the development of satellite-based technologies and services, with a focus on promoting European industries. ERT Ellinikí Radiofonía Tileórasi (ERT) is the public s ervice media organization of Greece, currently operating several national and regional television and radio services as well as an online offer. For ERT, membership of 5G-MAG is driven by increasing interest in the application of 5G technologies in the domain of content distribution, as well as production and contribution. Media Broadcast Media Broadcast is Germany's largest service provider in the broadcasting and media industry, from contribution to content production and content management to broadcasting and distribution. Among other topics, Media Broadcast brings to 5G-MAG its expertise on 5G campus networks, which are particularly suitable for more flexible production and for high-quality broadcast transmissions.     Dr. Jordi J. Gimenez, 5G-MAG Project Manager, will be participating in the online webinar "5G Opportunities for Media Distribution" organised by IEEE BTS and SMPTE. 3GPP technologies are being shaped to accommodate features and functionalities demanded by the media industry. Originally driven by the needs of mobile networks to accommodate the increasing consumption of multimedia content, the scope has broadened to offer solutions to different stakeholders - including media service providers, CDN providers, network operators - for the distribution of services to the end users. Enhancements to 5G include features to improve its ability to distribute media content and services, not only using unicast but also relying on multicast or broadcast, edge caching, virtualized media functions, network slicing or even the potential of using both terrestrial and satellite networks. A wide set of options that may create the framework for enhancing IP-based distribution of media content to users.
