- New 3GPP Study on Media Production over 5G NPN
3GPP will soon start a Study on Media Production over 5G NPN. As set out in our Explainers (https://www.5g-mag.com/explainers, Non-Public 5G Networks (stand-alone or integrated in a public network), open possibilities to make 5G fit the specific requirements of audio-visual media production in different scenarios. The new work in 3GPP will do, among others, the following: - Develop reference media production architectures including media and control flows (such as uplink video, return video, tally, etc). - Identify relevant QoS requirements for media production workflows (bit rates, loss rates, formats, latencies and jitter) - Identify relevant 5G System features like NPNs, Network Slicing, QoS classes, network event reporting and assistance,... - Identify the suitability of existing media production content delivery protocols, codecs and service layers for 5G System usage. - Study media device and network orchestration solutions (such as AMWA NMOS), and their integration/interactions with the 5G exposure framework. The work is supported by Ericsson, AT&T, IRT b-com, BBC, Dolby Laboratories, European Broadcasting Union, Orange, Sennheiser, Tencent, Qualcomm and Verizon.
- 5G-MAG welcomes BAI Communications as new member
The 5G-MAG Steering Group has recently approved the membership of BAI Communications. BAI Communications is an Australian headquartered ‘neutral host’ communications service provider in Australia, USA and Canada, and provider of communications services in Hong Kong. In this sense, neutral host means that BAI is a specialist communications infrastructure owner and operator, but is not itself a broadcaster or telecommunications carrier. In Australia, BAI provides managed services and portal services to broadcasters (i.e. fully or partially outsourced terrestrial broadcast transmission services) from a network of over 700 sites around the country, operations and maintenance services to emergency services communications networks operators (principally the NSW Government’s Government Radio Network), as well as site access arrangements to telecommunications and radiocommunications operators. In the USA and Canada, BAI Communications companies provide neutral host communications services including telecommunications, Wi-Fi, and emergency services communications within the New York City and Toronto subway systems. - 5G-MAG partnering with 3GPP as MRP
The 5G Media Action Group is delighted to have joined 3GPP as a Market Representation Partner allowing our members to strengthen their views and influence in 3GPP activities, contributing to the media landscape of tomorrow and shaping technologies and networks to meet their requirements. 5G-MAG members contribute to 3GPP on a diversity of topics. 5G-MAG, as a cross-industry association ensures that their interests in the media industry domain are considered adequately in 3GPP standardisation, that the solutions are able to create added value across the entire value chain and that appropriate regulatory frameworks are in place to foster technology deployment and implementation. 5G-MAG's MRP status was validated by correspondence, in the absence of physical 3GPP OP#45 meeting. - New Explainer! Stand-alone NPNs for Media Production
Are you working on the media industry? Do you know what 5G can offer to enhance for media production workflows? Our explainers, developed inside our workgroups provide unbiased and factual information about the application of 5G for media. Non-Public Networks are a key feature provided by 5G. On-site and production, venues and special events coverage are example of use cases that may be supported by SNPNs. 5G-PMSE equipment can make use of 5G technologies to enhance performance, throughput and reliability while implementing more flexible IP workflows. - 09.12.2020 - IEEE BTS/SMPTE Webinar - 5G Opportunities for Content Production
Maria Dolores Perez (Sennheiser) will be participating in the online virtual event hosted by the IEEE BTS and SMPTE. In the talk, Dr. Pérez Guirao summarizes the work conducted over the past two and a half years within 3GPP, EBU, and 5G-MAG working groups, for the development of 5G technology for content production. First, Dr. Pérez Guirao discusses content production use cases and their potential requirements to 5G. Although most of the use cases discussed are already possible with existing technologies, they may see a successive migration to 5G as far as it is able to provide an added value (e.g. cost reduction, simplification of workflows, interoperability) to involved stakeholders. Further use cases, that may be first enabled by 5G, will also be discussed. Further, Dr. Pérez Guirao will resume the standardization activities initiated by the content production community in 3GPP Rel-17 as well as the 5G-MAG activities to accelerate standards development and adoption. To conclude the talk, Dr. Gómez Vaquero, as the project coordinator, will introduce the recently started 5G-RECORDS (https://5g-ppp.eu/5g-records/) project, an EU funded project which for the very first time brings together at a large scale the content production (PMSE) sector with the telecom sector.
