  • MoU signed between 5G India Forum and 5G-MAG

    5G-MAG and 5G India Forum have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in building and consolidating a successful global ecosystem for industrial wireless communications and in particular to promote the implementation of 5G mobile communication technologies for media services and applications. This MoU will facilitate cooperation in topics of common interest by the joint participation in events, meetings and promotional activities, with the aim to raise awareness of how global Internet and 5G-based access technologies and APIs can be applied to enhance current and develop future multimedia applications . About the 5G India Forum 5GIF is an industry collaborative forum which was established to enable synergizing the national efforts and play a significant role in shaping the strategic, commercial and regulatory development of the 5G ecosystem in India.     OPEN-SOURCE MEDIA APPLICATION REFERENCE TOOLS WORKSHOP This is an online workshop organized by 5G-MAG and the DVB Project in collaboration with the DASH Industry Forum , the Consumer Technology Association and the HbbTV Association . It is open to anyone with an interest in open-source reference tools for use in the context of media applications. EVENT: OPEN-SOURCE MEDIA APPLICATION REFERENCE TOOLS WORKSHOP DATE: Monday 9th May 2022 TIME: 15:00 - 17:30 CEST LOCATION: ON-LINE AUDIENCE: The event is open to anyone with an interest in open-source reference tools for use in the context of media applications. It is in particular targeted to the development community, researchers and academia. SUMMARY OF THE WORKSHOP - Kickstarting deeper collaboration on open-source tools for media applications Five organizations that develop and promote open standards for media distribution came together in May for an online workshop aiming to kickstart deeper collaboration. The OSMART workshop – standing for Open-Source Media Application Reference Tools – was organized by the DVB Project and 5G-MAG in cooperation with the DASH Industry Forum , the HbbTV Association and the Consumer Technology Association WAVE Project. The workshop, which was attended by over 100 participants around the world, opened with six short presentations on relevant projects involving one or more of the participating organizations. The presentations were followed by an open discussion on possible technical synergies and opportunities for collaboration. The slides that were presented are available in the links below, along with an overview of the discussions that followed. The participating organizations agreed that it had been a valuable exercise and that they would welcome further activities under the OSMART banner. It provided an opportunity to better understand what each organization is doing in terms of software. It was particularly useful to clarify who is doing what in the overall distribution chain, with a distinction to be drawn between test materials, conformance frameworks and reference implementations. Based on these initial presentations, a future event could usefully identify opportunities to collaborate on development and to facilitate interoperability through building applications, use cases and demonstrations.     Memorandum of Understanding signed between the “6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association” (6G-IA) and the “5G Media Action Group (5G-MAG) Association”. On 26th September, 2023, the Chairperson of the 6G-IA, Dr. Colin Willcock, and the Chairperson of 5G-MAG, Antonio Arcidiacono, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further promote cooperation. The 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA), in the framework of its activities as coordinator of the SNS ICE project*, and the 5G Media Action Group (5G-MAG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on topics of mutual interest in the field of next-generation communication networks, systems and applications.   • 5G-MAG members gather at the General Assembly'23 with lots of news and demos

    5G-MAG held its seventh General Assembly in Geneva last week. The meeting was an opportunity for members to meet in person, discuss current areas of work and future topics and enjoy demos brought for the occasion. The 5G-MAG Workgroup chairs had the chance to provide an overview of all the achievements during 2023 which led to packed agenda. 5G-MAG Demos: XR Reference Tools (Qualcomm) and New Video New Life (Huawei) The 5G-MAG members present during the meeting could also enjoy demonstrations on: New Video New Life, brought by Huawei, showing new characteristics of Advanced Media Services including Social (Video Call on TV over VoLTE, Video Co-Viewing (watch party) and Remote Content Sharing), Intelligence (Intelligent assistance & Companion (Digital Human), Fitness & Exercise) and Ubiquitous (Multi-Screen Transferring) features. the XR Reference Tools that will be soon made public in our GitHub and contributed by Qualcomm consisting of a Unity project to load an MPEG-I Scene Description document and render it; a native implementation of the Media Access Functions API as defined in ISO/IEC 23090-14; Media Access Function API Unity3D package; a fork of the glTFast project with modifications to parse the MPEG-I scene description glTF extension; an initial set of MPEG-I Scene Description assets; and an initial support for extensions to blender to generate 3D assets. Reports on the Areas of Work Media over IP: Live Contribution and Remote Production The Workgroup CP Chairs, Thibaud Biatek (Nokia) and Jens Pilz (Sennheiser) highlighted the recent publication of the “Guidelines on registration and onboarding for media production equipment over 5G NPNs“ and the work in progress in WI_008 regarding support of Time Sensitive Communications in the 5G System and Uplink Media Streaming, The Workgroup EaR Chair, Prakash Moorut (Shure) focused on the completion of report “Spectrum access for live media production using Non-Public Networks (NPNs)” and the work in progress in WI_006 on deployment models for media production using NPNs. Live and On-demand media streaming The Workgroup CD Chair, David Vargas (BBC) focused on the work kick-started around 5G Media Streaming and the tracking of specification issues in GitHub and the workflow established to fix them including regular exchanges with 3GPP SA4. The Workgroup DEV Coordination, Jordi J. Gimenez (5G-MAG Project Office), highlighted the 5G-MAG Reference Tools projects building support for advanced features such a network assistance, QoE metrics reporting and consumption reporting. The Workgroup UC Chairs, Roland Beutler (SWR) and Simon T. Jones (DTG) reported on the work in progress under WI_002 on mobile distribution and scalability of concurrently consumed content. 5G Broadcast for TV, Radio and Emergency Alerts The Workgroup CD Chair reported on the completion of ETSI TS 103 720 v 1.2.1 and the on-going capture of issues in GitHub for v1.3.1. The Workgroup DEV Coordinator announced the upcoming contribution an Android-based middleware component that may enable developing applications based on this operating system. 5G Multicast and Broadcast delivery over 5G networks The Workgroup CD Chair reported on the completion of the explainer on 5MBS and the collection of specification issues in GitHub and regular exchange with SA4. the Workgroup DEV Coordinator mentioned the work to support an MBS core network in the 5G-MAG Reference Tools. Media beyond 2D: Advanced Media Services over 5G The WG UC Chairs reported on the on-going collection of use cases around volumetric video, free view point, immersive media, etc brought by the membership together with architecture, feasibility and potential requirements. XR and Immersive Media The approval of a new Work Item on “XR and 3D Assets in 5G-based communication” was announced, together with the upcoming contributions on XR tools being integrated in GitHub, for which early access can already be requested. Focusing on cutting-edge trends and innovative applications in 5G Broadcast, these experts shared invaluable experiences and provided profound insights for the digital and mobile advancement within the global broadcasting sector. 5G Broadcast is a novel wireless radio and television system adhering to the 5G standard, capable of transmitting signals through high-power high towers to reach both large TV screens and small handset screens. Serving as a crucial technological pathway in the evolution and enhancement of wireless radio and television, this pioneering technology not only facilitates high-quality live television but also supports various services, including emergency broadcasts and data transmission. It represents a substantial leap forward in the realm of radio and television and holds significant milestone value. This technology also facilitates seamless synergy between broadcasting and communication networks, providing users with an extensive array of services such as radio and TV programs, on-demand online audiovisual content, live sports, and various services accessible anytime, anywhere. Powered by an "intelligent engine" equipped with precise intelligence, it enables both general and tailored content delivery services, propelling the evolution of media from mere "combination" to true "convergence". This advancement not only energizes cultural initiatives and cultural trade but also becomes an integral component of international trade in services. The Global Alliance for Trade in Services will persist in supporting information and digital innovation, epitomized by 5G technology, fostering fresh models and structures within the service sector and service trade, and furthering international collaboration across various domains. Wu Yabin, Head of UNIDO ITPO Beijing, highlighted the significance of 5G Broadcast in addressing the digital divide and advancing Sustainable Development Goals from a sustainability standpoint. He emphasized that China's initiatives, including fostering an open global economy and broadening market access for digital and other products, are poised to create new opportunities. Li Xiang, a member of the Party Leadership Group of the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Radio and Television and the bureau's Chief Engineer, as well as Chen Hongtao, the Vice Director of the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Administrative Committee, attended the event. They delivered remarks and extended congratulations to the organizers for the smooth execution of the meeting. Zheng Zhiming, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Professor at Beihang University, highlighted that 5G Broadcast represents a significant technological advancement in the radio and television industry. He emphasized the necessity for new capabilities that facilitate the precise and intelligent application of media content, such as intelligent recommendation and search, and the need for new capacities that enhance the precise scheduling of a converged media network, such as intelligent scheduling policies and adaptive transmission. Academician Zheng Zhiming discussed the importance of precise intelligence technology. In response to the evolving technological requirements in new business landscapes, he expressed the industry's need to develop a core 5G Broadcast intelligence engine driven by precise intelligence technology. This innovation would empower 5G Broadcast, elevate the quality of business services, and augment its fundamental competitiveness. Jordi Gimenez, Head of Technology at 5G-MAG Media Action Group, underscores that while broadcast technologies beyond 3GPP face challenges in integration into primary devices, 5G Broadcast, adhering to the 3GPP standard, can be readily supported on mainstream devices. To facilitate 5G Broadcast prototype development and trials, 5G-MAG and its members have developed open-source software compatible with software-defined radio (SDR) platforms. Additionally, 5G-MAG has created a demonstration system for broadcast-communication convergence services and emergency broadcasts, which was showcased during the IBC show. Elena Puigrefagut, Senior Project Manager at the European Broadcasting Union, presented EBU's initiatives in the standardization and application of 5G Broadcast. EBU successfully established and updated new 5G Broadcast standards in 2023 at ITU, 3GPP, and ETSI levels. Moving forward, EBU will persist in exploring enhanced coverage by integrating 5G Broadcast with broadband, ensuring compatibility between 5G Broadcast and DVB-T/T2 systems, and driving the comprehensive implementation of 5G Broadcast across Europe. Gaelle Kaminsky, Deputy Director of the Broadcast Business Unit at the major French broadcasting operator TDF, expanded on their vision and roadmap, outlining their phased deployment plan for 5G Broadcast. Their strategy involves the gradual introduction of 5G Broadcast on select terrestrial digital TV channels from 2026 to 2028, with a subsequent rollout on planned channels commencing in 2028. Kaminsky anticipates a period where DVB-T2 will coexist with 5G Broadcast for an extended duration; however, the ultimate objective is to transition entirely to 5G Broadcast. Frank Copsidas, Founder of the US broadcasting network operator XGen Network (XGN), presented the recent advancements of 5G Broadcast in the United States during the meeting. XGN initiated 24-hour broadcasting trials of 5G Broadcast at the WWOO-LD television station in Boston, utilizing the pre-existing transmitter and antenna feeder system. These trials encompass services such as live TV and emergency broadcasts, ensuring seamless reception on both large and small screens, and guaranteeing robust indoor coverage. The company intends to subsequently expand the network of stations. Johann Mika, Chief Innovation Officer and 5G Broadcast Project Manager at the Austrian broadcast network operator ORS, provided an update on the 5G Broadcast trial network in Vienna. This update included various significant tests conducted by ORS, such as the 5G transmission test at the Donaufestival in June, a low-latency split-screen live broadcast test during the MotoGP World Championship in August, and the inaugural test of ORS-developed OBECA and NAKOLOS 5G Broadcast on open-source platforms. Du Zhimin, Senior Director of Technical Standards at Qualcomm, on behalf of communication technology company, outlined the promising applications of 5G Broadcast in emergency response. He emphasized that 5G Broadcast offers an efficient means to transmit emergency messages to handsets, addressing various emergency scenarios such as pre-disaster warnings, disaster response, and post-disaster recovery. Qualcomm reaffirms its dedication to equipping the broadcast industry with mature technologies and a robust ecosystem within cellular networks. Aziz Taga, Head of 5G Products and Business Development at Germany’s Rohde & Schwarz, highlighted the increasing significance of 5G Broadcast, drawing attention from governments, public authorities, private enterprises, broadcasters, and TV suppliers worldwide, leading to significant investments in the technology. Rohde & Schwarz has already conducted 5G Broadcast demonstration trials in various countries such as Germany, Italy, France, and Brazil. Moreover, an expanding list of nations, including Brazil, India, Malaysia, and Turkey, are embarking on the journey to deploy and test the 5G Broadcast system. These efforts aim to establish a robust broadcasting system for the future. China has made significant strides in the active exploration of 5G Broadcast in recent years. Lu Rui, a Professor at the Communication University of China, elaborated on the research and development accomplishments of 5G Broadcast technology and its promising application prospects. Zhang Jun, the Director of the Sichuan Provincial Radio and Television Transmission Center, provided an overview, stating that Sichuan has initiated the first trials and deployment of 5G Broadcast. Additionally, Dr. Zhang Yu, representing the Academy of Broadcasting Science (ABS) under China’s National Radio and Television Administration, discussed the collaborative efforts within the industrial chain between China and foreign countries, encompassing technical standards, product research and development, and validation tests. Furthermore, during the technology demonstration of 5G Broadcast services at the forum, attendees experienced firsthand the substantial application potential of 5G Broadcast in emergency broadcasts and on-demand online audiovisual services. In the summit's discussion sessions, participants engaged in comprehensive discussions concerning the developmental paths and evolving necessities of terrestrial digital TV. They freely expressed their insights on various topics, including collaborative strategies, the integration of broadcasting and communication networks, spectrum planning, deployments, and the technological industrialization of 5G Broadcast utilizing high-power high towers. Additionally, they proposed solutions to propel the global deployment of 5G Broadcast further.
