- 15.06.23 - 5G-MAG at IEEE BMSB 2023
Join us on Thursday 15th June at the IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting 2023 in Beijing (China). 5G-MAG colleagues will be there presenting the progress done with the 5G-MAG Reference Tools since we kickstarted the Target 2023 development roadmap. Media over 5G in Action - Target 2023 for 5G-MAG Reference Tools EVENT: IEEE International Symposium on Broadband Multimedia Systems and Broadcasting 2023 DATE: 15th June 2023 TIME: 16:20 - 17:30 CEST LOCATION: Beijing, China INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT: https://www.bmsb2023.com/ Media over 5G in Action - Target 2023 for 5G-MAG Reference Tools Authors: Thomas Stockhammer (Qualcomm), Daniel Silhavy (Fraunhofer FOKUS), Jordi J. Giménez (5G-MAG), Richard Bradbury (BBC), Johann Mika (ORS), David Waring (BBC), Yiqing Cao (Qualcomm), Shilin Ding (Qualcomm), Kurt Krauss (Dolby) Abstract 3GPP offers a set of specifications for the Media Industry, in particular for the distribution of TV Services to mobile devices. In the context of 5G, 5G Media Streaming and 5G Broadcast are prominent examples of technology enablers that support third-party service providers to enable and optimize media delivery to mobile devices. While core specifications are complete, 3GPP lacks a reference and conformance program to validate and prototype its specifications and, by this, to make them accessible and tangible for content providers. The 5G Media Action Group (5G-MAG) has undertaken the task to fill this gap by providing a set of open-source 5G-MAG Reference Tools. Building on the launch success for 5G Broadcast, four additional minimal viable products (MVPs) are introduced: 5G Media Streaming without and with Media Session Handling, seamless broadcast/unicast switching and Public Warning Services for Emergency Alerts. These MVPs focus on building core functions and reference points to provide baseline core functions that can later be extended by the developer community with more detailed features. Additional information is provided related to usage and applications of the 5G-MAG Reference Tools, including the combination with DVB-I service discovery metadata as well as reports of demonstrations and trials. Planning of next steps is discussed.

- 18.04.23 - 5G-MAG at NABSHOW
5G-MAG is participating at a conference session during the NABSHOW 2023. Hands on towards next generation media distribution with 5G-MAG Reference Tools Presented by Aytac Biber (Qualcomm) EVENT: NABSHOW Conference DATE: Tuesday 18 April TIME: 3:20-3:40 PM PT LOCATION: LAS VEGAS, US INFORMATION ABOUT THE EVENT: https://nab23.mapyourshow.com/8_0/sessions/session-details.cfm?scheduleid=217 Title: Hands on Towards Next Generation Media Distribution with the 5G-MAG Reference Tools Authors: Daniel Silhavy (Fraunhofer FOKUS), Richard Bradbury (BBC), David Waring (BBC), Dev Audsin (BBC), Thomas Stockhammer (Qualcomm), Aytac Biber (Qualcomm), Kurt Krauss (Dolby), Johann Mika (ORS), Jordi J. Gimenez (5G-MAG) Abstract: The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has defined multiple specifications for 5G Media Streaming. With 3GPP Release 17, 5G Media Streaming specifications are expanded into the domains of dynamic QoS policies, event exposure, Multicast Broadcast Services, Edge applications, XR and The Metaverse. However, 3GPP is lacking a reference and conformance program to validate and prototype these specifications. The 5G Media Action Group (5G-MAG) has undertaken the task to accelerate the creation of 5G Media applications by providing the open-source 5G-MAG Reference Tools. In this paper we focus on the implementation of 5G Media Streaming components in the 5G-MAG Reference Tools. Based on a set of industry relevant use-cases, we identify four minimum viable products (MVP’s). Starting with a simple implementation of the 5GMSd Application Server (AS) and 5GMSd Aware Application for media playback we move to more advanced features such as media session handling and dynamic configuration of the AS and the 5GMSd Application Function using the M1d and the M3d interfaces. The presented features serve as a foundation for contributors to add more advanced functionality such as DVB-I Hybrid Service over 5G Broadcast and 5G Media Streaming and Premium and Targeted Content Insertion on top.
- 5G Media2Go - Audiovisual Services for In-Car Infotainment Systems (SWR)
DOWNLOAD NOW the final report of the 5G Media2Go project. The next generation of mobile telecommunication technologies 5G comes with a promise of various new applications. This also applies to the media and entertainment sector for the production of new forms of content and for its distribution. There seems to be an opportunity to target in particular smartphones, tablets and vehicles with both linear TV and radio programmes and nonlinear offers such as media libraries or podcasts. Future autonomous cars are considered a new very important use case for media consumption. Broadcast, automotive and telecommunication industry have a common interest to offer users access to attractive media content and services while in a car or public transport. The combination of linear and nonlinear content on the integrated infotainment system of contemporary cars constitutes an important step into this direction. The location or the route of the vehicle taking into consideration the expected duration of travel could be used in the future to generate recommendations thereby offering additional value for mobile media consumption.
