MBS User Services

Provisioning of MBS User Services

Defined in TS 26.502 clauses 4.5 and 7.2 · procedure clause 5.3

The MBS Application Provider provisions an MBS User Service, then MBS User Data Ingest Sessions within it, each with one or more MBS Distribution Sessions. It does so at Nmb10, or through the NEF at N33 and Nmb5. The MBSF then creates an MBS Session in the MB-SMF and the Distribution Session in the MBSTF.

Object Distribution Method

Defined in TS 26.502 clause 6.1 · protocols TS 26.517 clause 6

Delivers discrete binary objects over an MBS Session, in four operating modes: single object, collection, carousel and streaming. With FLUTE, the MBSTF describes the objects currently transmitted with the Profiled FDT Schema of TS 26.346. The objects of the collection and carousel modes are listed in an object manifest.

Packet Distribution Method

Defined in TS 26.502 clause 6.2 · protocols TS 26.517 clause 7

Delivers packet streams over an MBS Session. TS 26.502 states it is particularly useful for IP-based services whose content delivery protocols are defined outside the MBS specifications. The MBSTF may add packet sequence numbering and FEC redundancy. Two operating modes: forward-only (Layer 3 proxying) and proxy (Layer 4 proxying).

User Service Announcement

Defined in TS 26.502 clauses 4.2.4, 4.5.7 and 4.5.8 · procedures clauses 5.3A and 5.4 · format TS 26.517 clause 5

The MBSF compiles an MBS User Service Announcement that describes the current Distribution Sessions. It reaches the MBS Client by unicast at MBS-5, in the MBS User Service Announcement Channel at MBS-4-MC (an MBS Distribution Session in OBJECT_CAROUSEL mode), or through the MBS Application Provider at MBS-8. The User Service Descriptions document is a JSON document, delivered with its dependent resources as a multipart/related bundle.

Object repair

Defined in TS 26.502 clauses 4.2.6 and 4.3.4 · procedure clause 5.6 · protocols TS 26.517 clauses 6.2.4 and 10

With the Object Distribution Method, an MBS Client can retrieve from the MBS AS, at MBS-4-UC, the missing portions of objects not received intact at MBS-4-MC. The MBSF decides whether to enable it. Post-session repair, with a randomised back-off, is defined; in-session repair is for further study. Repair is not used with the OBJECT_STREAMING mode in Release 18. The MBSTF Client sends an HTTP GET, or a partial GET with byte ranges, for each damaged object.

Application Layer FEC

Defined in TS 26.502 clauses 4.3.3.2 and 4.3.3.3, table 4.5.6-1

The MBSTF has an optional AL-FEC subfunction for both distribution methods. The FEC configuration of a Distribution Session identifies the scheme with a term from the RMT vocabulary of FEC Encoding IDs, and gives the overhead as a proportion of the MBS data.

Security

Defined in TS 26.502 clauses 4.3.4A and 4.8 · protocol TS 26.517 clause 11

Security protection of MBS traffic uses a control plane procedure, for multicast only, or a user plane procedure, for multicast and broadcast, as defined in TS 33.501 annex W. The MBSSF, co-located with the MBSF or the MBSTF, generates, manages and distributes the MBS Service Keys and MBS Traffic Keys. The MBS Application Provider requests protection with the Transport security protection flag of a Distribution Session. At MBS-10, the MBSF Client retrieves the MBS Service Key from the MBSSF with the protocol of TS 33.246 clause 6.3.

Service areas, location-dependent and multiplexed sessions

Defined in TS 26.502 clause 4.5.2 and table 4.5.6-1

A Distribution Session may specify target service areas, outside which MBS data is not transmitted. Location-dependent variants of a service share the same MBS Session Identifier with disjoint target service areas. With the Multiplexed service flag, Distribution Sessions with the same (or empty) target service areas are multiplexed onto one MBS Session. Target UE classes state whether a broadcast session is intended for reduced capability (RedCap) UEs, full capability UEs or both.

Status notifications

Defined in TS 26.502 clause 4.6.2, table 4.6.2-1

The MBSF notifies the MBS Application Provider, or the NEF, of events such as session started, Distribution Session established or activated, user data ingest failure and User Service advertisement. Events may originate in the MB-SMF, the PCF, the MBSTF or the MBSF itself.

Interworking with eMBMS

Defined in TS 26.502 clause 4.9

A common TMGI is used in the MBS System and in the eMBMS System. The User Service Announcement can signal that the same service is also available over eMBMS, so a UE with both clients may choose either network and switch between them as reception conditions vary.

Conformance profiles

Defined in TS 26.517 clause 12

Conformance profiles enable interoperability and signal which features a Distribution Session uses. The Baseline MBS Distribution Session Profile is identified by urn:3GPP:26517:17:baseline.

For further study

Reception reporting by the MBS Client (TS 26.502 clauses 4.2.5 and 4.5.4) and the use of the network QoS primitives by MBS User Services (clause 4.7) are for further study in Release 18.

MBS

TS 23.247 groups the MBS procedures in three: a "Common procedure for Multicast and Broadcast" (clause 7.1), "MBS procedures for multicast Session" (clause 7.2) and "MBS procedures for broadcast Session" (clause 7.3). Each feature below says which of MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast it applies to, from the clauses that define it.

Broadcast MBS session

Applies to: MBS Broadcast · Defined in TS 23.247 clauses 4.2.2 and 6 · procedure clause 7.3.1 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clause 16.10.6

The AF starts a broadcast MBS session with TMGI allocation and MBS Session Create, which sets up resources in the MB-UPF and in NG-RAN for 5GC Shared delivery. The MB-SMF asks the AMFs serving the MBS service area to create a broadcast context, and they send the setup request to all NG-RAN nodes that support MBS in the area. A UE that is pre-configured with the needed configuration does not need to interact with the network. In NG-RAN, the UE receives the broadcast configuration on the MCCH in any RRC state. Broadcast has no HARQ-ACK feedback, uses dynamic scheduling only, and supports slot-level repetition of MTCH.

Multicast join and leave

Applies to: MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clauses 4.2.1 and 6.1 · procedures clauses 7.2.1 and 7.2.2

A UE joins a Multicast MBS session with a PDU Session Modification Request on an associated PDU Session, carrying the MBS Session IDs and a join request. The SMF authorises the join from the UE's MBS subscription data and whether the session is open to any UE. An NG-RAN node sets up shared delivery when it serves at least one UE of the session, and may release it when the last UE leaves.

Multicast session activation and deactivation

Applies to: MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 4.3 · procedures clause 7.2.5 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clause 16.10.5.2

Activation and deactivation apply to multicast only. The MB-SMF triggers them on a notification from the MB-UPF (downlink data, or none for some duration) or on a request from the AF, directly or through the NEF. To notify UEs in RRC_IDLE or RRC_INACTIVE that a session has been activated, the gNB uses group notification: a paging message containing the MBS session ID pages all UEs that joined the session.

Mobility and switching between shared and individual delivery

Applies to: MBS Multicast (TS 23.247 clause 6.3.1); MBS Broadcast mobility is clause 6.3.2 · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.3 · procedures clause 7.2.3 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clause 16.10.5.3

Multicast mobility is supported between NG-RAN nodes that both support MBS, and between a node that supports MBS and one that does not. At handover to a node without MBS, delivery switches from 5GC Shared to 5GC Individual; on the way back, the SMF switches it to 5GC Shared. To minimise data loss, the MB-UPF adds a sequence number per MBS QoS flow. A broadcast service continues in the target node if the same session is established there with 5GC Shared delivery.

Multicast reception in RRC_INACTIVE

Applies to: MBS Multicast · Added in Release 18 · defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.17 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clauses 16.10.5.2 and 16.10.5.3.5, TS 38.331 clause 5.10

To provide a multicast service to more UEs in a cell, NG-RAN may move UEs that can receive in RRC_INACTIVE out of RRC_CONNECTED. The gNB decides in which state the UE receives. In RRC_INACTIVE, multicast uses PTM only, without HARQ feedback. The configuration comes in the RRCRelease message and on the multicast MCCH, whose scheduling is in SIB24. TS 38.331 V17.17.0 has no SIB24 and no clause 5.10; they appear in Release 18.

Local and location dependent MBS

Applies to: MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.2 · procedures clauses 7.2.4 and 7.3.4

A local MBS service is provided in one MBS service area: only UEs in it receive the content. A location dependent MBS service distributes different content to different MBS service areas, with the same MBS Session ID and a different Area Session ID for each area.

QoS and policy control

Applies to: MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clauses 6.6 and 6.10 · services clause 9.2

The network supports QoS control per MBS session, with one or more GBR or non-GBR QoS flows. The policy and charging control framework of TS 23.503 applies, for example MBS Session binding and QoS Flow binding.

Authorisation and identifiers

Applies to: MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clauses 6.1, 6.4 and 6.5 · services clauses 9.1.2 and 9.4.2

The 5G Core authorises a UE for multicast: whether it may use the Multicast service in the PLMN, and whether it may receive a given session. A Multicast MBS session may be open to any UE. An MBS session is identified by a TMGI (broadcast and multicast) or by a source specific IP multicast address (multicast only).

Frequency selection for broadcast

Applies to: MBS Broadcast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.5.4 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clause 16.10.6.5, SIB21 in TS 38.331

The MBS Frequency Selection Area (FSA) ID guides the UE's frequency selection for a broadcast session. It is sent in the service announcement, and the UE compares it with the FSA IDs in the SIBs. NR MBS supports frequency layer prioritisation for broadcast sessions.

Service announcement and pre-configuration

Applies to: MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.11 · TS 24.575 clause 4

The service announcement describes the services delivered in an MBS session. It may be encoded as defined in TS 26.517 or in an application-specific format. A UE may also be pre-configured, per PLMN, with the information to discover and receive services.

Power saving

Applies to: MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.16 · procedures clauses 7.2.10 and 7.3.8

UEs that use power saving functions wake up at coordinated times. The service announcement gives them a start time and/or scheduled activation times of the MBS session.

Broadcast for RedCap UEs

Applies to: MBS Broadcast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.19 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clause 16.10.6.6

The AF provides the "NR RedCap UE Information" parameter at MBS Session Creation, and the MB-SMF forwards it to NG-RAN. NG-RAN may configure an additional RedCap common frequency resource when the default one is wider than the RedCap UE capability.

Resource sharing in network sharing

Applies to: MBS Broadcast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.18 · NG-RAN TS 38.300 clause 16.10.6.8

When the AF creates broadcast MBS sessions with the same content through several core networks, the shared NG-RAN allocates radio resources for only one of them.

Group message delivery

Applies to: MBS Broadcast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.15 · procedures clause 7.5 · service Nnef_MBSGroupMsgDelivery

An AF can deliver a payload to a group of UEs in a geographical area through a broadcast MBS session. It uses the Object Distribution Method of the MBSTF.

Security

Applies to: MBS Broadcast and MBS Multicast · Defined in TS 23.247 clause 6.13

The MBS security function is implemented in the MBSF and MBSTF, so it applies only with configuration options 2 and 3.

Interworking with EPS and QoE

Defined in TS 23.247 clauses 5.2, 6.8 and 6.20

Interworking between MBS and eMBMS applies at the service layer when the same service is provided over both. QoE measurement collection may also be supported for the reception of multicast and broadcast sessions.
